On January 21st, the Gikas family stood together in front of Busch Gardens for a family photo.  Who would’ve been thinking that this would be the last time they could take a family photo or that it might be their last vacation together.  It was also Bob’s 39th birthday that he shared with his 9-year-old son.

At baseball practice four days later…in view of his son, Bob fell forward without warning.  Although everything possible was done to save his life, Bob ultimately died of a massive heart attack at the age of 39, leaving behind his wife, Nancy, 9-year-old son, Bobby Jr., and 4-year-old triplets- Katie, Krista and Tommy.

In that moment, everything changed forever for the Gikas Family.

Bob grew up on the Southside of Chicago and attended St. Rita High School where he developed his passion for sports, specifically football and baseball.  Bob shared that excitement with his son and loved coaching his baseball and football teams, sharing his knowledge and Rita spirit.  It felt unreal that Bob was gone, so quickly, and without a chance to say goodbye.  But what we found is that we could still feel Bob’s love all around us…in the little things, and the outpouring of love from family and friends, with hearts just aching for the loss of a loving husband, a dedicated father, a caring son and brother, and a friend that would do anything for you.

Bob worked for Norfolk Southern Railroad for more than 8 years, and more recently, Grand Trunk (Canadian National).  He was a member of the BLE union.  With the major bread winner gone and very little or possibly no insurance to speak of, Nancy is struggling to maintain a normal life for her family.  She comes to terms every day with another way (big or little), that the loss affects her and her kids.

Now it is our turn to “step up to the plate” and Be There 4 Bob because he can no longer be there to support his family.  In an effort to ease the financial burden on the Gikas family, friends and family are hosting a benefit in Bob's honor on:
